Boko Haram Increases Attacks As Nigeria Elections Loom

Boko Haram, Nigeria's homegrown Islamic extremist group, is increasing the ferocity and tempo of its attacks, destabilizing Africa's most populous nation as it prepares for elections.
Girls as young as 10 are being used as suicide bombers. There have been daring attacks on military barracks in Nigeria and Cameroon. The group, which wants to impose Shariah across the country and is increasing its territory under a self-proclaimed Islamic caliphate, recently massacred hundreds of civilians, with death toll estimates ranging up to 2,000.
President Goodluck Jonathan, the front-runner in the Feb. 14 presidential and legislative elections, launched his campaign last week with no reference to the seizure of a key military base at Baga, near the border of Cameroon and Chad. As soldiers fled the base on Jan. 3, Boko Haram went on a killing spree, reportedly drowning many in Lake Chad. Amnesty International called it the deadliest massacre in Boko Haram's 5-year insurgency.
Survivors have described hundreds of fighters riding into town in a column led by an armored personnel carrier stolen from the military, on the backs of pickup trucks and on motorcycles, firing rocket-propelled grenades and assault rifles and hurling homemade bombs that set buildings ablaze.
A military officer said that more than 10 days later, Baga remains under the control of Boko Haram.
"We have not heard any order deploying soldiers to return to Baga for now," he said. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he feared being punished by his superiors for talking to the press. "As a matter of fact, most of the soldiers that managed to escape from Baga had redeployed back to their mother stations of deployment."
The marginalized part of the country is semi-arid desert that turns to lush forest around Lake Chad and is home to traders, subsistence farmers, herdsmen and fishermen. It includes a couple of the biggest cattle markets on the continent.
Since August, when the insurgents declared they were recreating an ancient Islamic caliphate that included parts of Cameroon, Chad and Niger, they have seized or consolidated control of more than 10 percent of Nigerian territory, mostly in the state of Borno where the group was created. In Borno, Boko Haram holds 14 of the 27 local government areas including all the border crossings into Niger, Chad and Cameroon.
This week, hundreds of Boko Haram fighters attacked a Cameroonian military camp near the border, but, according to Cameroonian officials, they bit off more than they could chew. Cameroon's government said Tuesday that its military killed 143 militants with only one Cameroonian soldier killed.
Boko Haram also holds small parts of Nigeria's Adamawa and Yobe states. While most attacks occur in the northeast, leaving many Nigerians remote and uncaring about the conflict, hundreds were killed last year in car bomb attacks in Abuja, Nigeria's capital, and in Jos, both in central Nigeria.
Analysts say Boko Haram fighters numbered no more than 4,000 or 5,000 about 18 months ago when they began abducting hundreds of mainly young females and males. The group also has been recruiting fighters for pay in neighboring countries.
While there is little likelihood of Boko Haram overrunning Nigeria, many worry that the group's hostility to democracy will increase attacks around the elections. Nigerian troops have been unable to snuff out the insurgency despite a pledge by top commander last year to do so in a three-month span.
Boko Haram attracted international attention when it seized some 276 schoolgirls from a boarding school in April last year. Dozens escaped on their own but the failure of Nigeria's government and its once-powerful military to rescue 219 who remain missing has brought condemnation and puzzlement.
Nigeria's military budget amounts to between $5 billion and $6 billion a year, yet soldiers are reportedly being sent into battle with just 30 bullets, former U.S. Ambassador John Campbell to Nigeria told The Associated Press. Several generals last year were found guilty by a court-martial of delivering arms and information to Boko Haram. Soldiers say they are demoralized because Boko Haram outnumbers and outguns them where they're deployed in hostile territory without even food rations and because officers steal part of their salaries. Some of the troops who are supposed to be rotated every six months have been in the war zone for more than two years.
Campbell, now a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, said that Nigeria's military, once considered the single national institution that would prevent the country from breaking apart, is riven by tribal and religious cleavages.
Nigerian officials insist that voting will be carried out in the northeast next month, but it will be a challenge if not impossible to conduct the polling in an area where some 1.6 million people have been driven from their homes and in places where even government soldiers don't dare to tread.

Annie Idibia Opens On Her Life With 2face Idibia, Says She Wouldn't Want Her Daughter To Marry A Man Who Has Kids With Other Women ANNIE IDIBIA OPENS ON HER LIFE WITH 2FACE IDIBIA, SAYS SHE WOULDN'T WANT HER DAUGHTER TO MARRY A MAN WHO HAS KIDS WITH OTHER WOMEN

Annie Idibia, who covers the latest issue of Motherhood In-Style opened up about her life and marriage with 2face Idibia, his other children and her difficult pregnancies.

On being 2face Idibia's wife: "I’m married to Innocent, one of the most amazing men in the world. I want to believe our marriage is almost like every other marriage. He’s a good dad, great husband, a wonderful son-in-law, and he’s all that I thought he would be as a husband and more.

On the low points of their relationship: I think it would be the first time I heard that other people were having his baby, the second should be when we both sat down and agreed to end the relationship. We realized it couldn’t work and decided to break up. That was after I had Isabella.

On the high points of their relationship: His proposal was a high point; the way he went about it was special. And my wedding! I didn’t think we were going to end up together, and that’s the honest truth.

On his kids: I wish I was the mother of all his kids; the seven of them. But they are my kids; I just wish I was their biological mum. They’re awesome; you can’t help but love them. Everything else has made everything better.

On dealing with his other children: I won’t say it’s easy. I mean, you have kids with people, are you going to be their enemy? You have to have at least some civil relationship with them; you have to be very civil but God has been very faithful, and it’s still God all the way because it’s really not easy. I do not regret being with my husband but I would not want my daughter to be married to a man that has kids with other women, naturally. You know, it doesn’t make me love him less or feel like I don’t want to be here, I’m happy that I’m here, I don’t love him less, but I would not wish that for my daughter because even if the man is in, how about the other parties involved? But then, like I said, it’s key to be civil.

On her difficult pregnancies: I had CS for both kids. With Isabel it was good, it Olivia it was horrible. I was sick all through my second pregnancy, and it was difficult. With Isabel, it was easy.

Catch Drake, Nicki Minaj, Kendrick Lamar At The Same Festival This Summer

Drake, Nicki Minaj and Kendrick Lamar are hitting the U.K. hard this summer. Each of the three superstar rappers will be headlining a day at the upcoming Wireless Festival in July.
The full lineup was announced on Friday (Jan. 30), and although it includes a variety of performers, it’s definitely heavy on the hip-hop stars.

Drake will kick off the festivities on Friday, Jul. 3, while Kendrick Lamar and Avicii will co-headline on Saturday, Jul. 4, and Nicki Minaj and David Guetta team up for Sunday, Jul. 5. Not too shabby.
Nicki Minaj dropped her third album, The Pinkprint, in December, so she’ll have plenty of new music to perform. And both Drake and Kendrick Lamar are expected to drop new albums before summer — so hopefully they’ll both be out by then.
Additional hip-hop and R&B performers included Childish Gambino, Logic, Joey Bada$$, G-Eazy, ILoveMakonnen, August Alsina and Grandmaster Flash.

Apple Watch to reportedly feature powerful CPU, 60 fps display, terrible battery life

Ever since Apple announced that it was building its own smartwatch, fans of wearables have been eager to see what the Cupertino company would deliver. Whether you love it or hate it, Apple has a reputation for excellence, and for waiting until it can deliver a superior experience that make previous products from lesser companies look like floundering newbies by comparison. Now, that long-time reputation for excellence may be sorely tested by the one force in the universe that remains impervious to the company’s Reality Distortion Field — physics.
New reports indicate that while the Apple Watch will pack significant processing power and a fluid, 60Hz display, it won’t deliver much in the way of battery life. 9to5 Mac is claimingthat the CPU inside the Watch is close in power to the Apple A5 and running a stripped-down version of iOS known as SkiHill.

If true, this would actually put the Watch in the middle of the smartphone CPU pack. Many competitor products have adopted quad-core chips based on the Cortex-A7, or dual-core CPUs with embedded accelerators like the Cortex-M family. Apple’s A5, in contrast, was based on the Cortex-A9 — an older, but somewhat faster chip compared to the Cortex-A7.
Presumably, Apple will have moved the CPU to 28nm or 20nm (the original chip was built on 45nm before transitioning to 32m) but anything is possible at this point. Either way, 9to5 quotes its sources as saying that the iWatch will provide 2.5 hours of heavy application use, 3.5 hours of standard application use, and four hours when the device is used in straight fitness tracking applications. The watch should be able to display its clock face for up to three hours if left in that mode — which means, yes, apparently this is a watch that one wears without actually displaying the time on an ongoing basis.
Buried in that last point is something of a repudiation of the entire smartwatch concept. If a device can’t actually display the time, it’s going to disrupt the whole “I wear a smartwatch because phones are inconvenient” narrative. The larger problem Apple faces, of course, is that it’s incredibly hard to build powerful processors and gorgeous displays into wrist-mounted devices while simultaneously expecting them to last for hours.
If Apple doesn’t have a solution to this problem, it’s not because there’s anything wrong with Cupertino. The problem is, our semiconductor manufacturing may not be mature enough to solve the problem. Barring a major breakthrough in battery life or device performance, smartwatches may be an idea whose time never comes. Apple has reportedly been battling multiple production issues, from slower-than-expected inductive charging to the limited battery life. A great deal is riding on the company’s plans, but this may be one segment it can’t simply reinvent by force of will.

Stop Insulting Jonathan, Group Tells Amaechi

A non-governmental organisation called House-To-House Campaign Initiative for Goodluck Jonathan for 2015 has called on Rivers State Governor Rotimi Ameachi to stop insulting President Goodluck Jonathan.
This was contained in a statement signed by founder of the campaign organisation, Hon Ogidi Ben Bara in conjunction the South-South chapter, where they expressed displeasure over the attitude of the Rivers governor of insulting President Jonathan in public.
The statement reads; “It is no more acceptable to Founder, House to House Campaign Initiative for Goodluck Jonathan for 2015, Hon Ogidi Ben Bara and H2HCI, South-South chapter on the insult of Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State on President and Commander-In-Chief, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.
“We in House-to-House Campaign Initiative for Goodluck Jonathan for 2015 say Governor Amaechi must stop insulting the personality of President Jonathan, because it is undemocratic, uncivilised and immature for a sitting governor like Amaechi to point fingers at Mr. President as if they were age mates.
“We express our displeasure over the flippancy demonstrated by Amaechi, which is overheating the polity in Rivers State and causing political violence in the state. It is a motor-park approach to handling challenges before him.
“A boastful man like Amaechi cannot be relevant in the politics of Rivers State and the nation, because since Amaechi pitched tent of war he has lost respect among his people. He is only trying to make derogatory comments to spite Mr. President to score cheap political points.
“This will take him nowhere! He should be careful with his words and we want to tell Amaechi that he cannot cajole Rivers people and Nigerians over his self exaltation and authoritarian manner of doing things because surely he will be humbled someday.
“We want to unequivocally state here that Amaechi’s attitude is uncalled for and has got out of hand and must be stopped at this point because the person of President Jonathan deserves respect.”
Meanwhile, the statement condemned recent call made by Gen. Theophilus Danjuma on the arrest of ex-freedom fighters in the Niger Delta over statements made by Government Ekpudomenowei, aka, Tompolo, Alhaji Mujahid Dokubo-Asari, and Chief Victor Ben Ebikabowei.
“It is imperative to state that the recent call made by Gen. Theophilus Danjuma to arrest Niger Delta leaders, High Chief Government Ekpudomenowei, aka, Tompolo, Alhaji Mujahid Dokubo-Asari, Chief Victor Ben Ebikabowei, aka, Boy Loaf, and others is not good for the polity.
“We want to mention and let Gen. Danjuma know that they are instrumental to the direct and indirect survival and growth of the Nigerian economy and national development.
“With all sense of respect, we least expected him as an elder statesman and somebody who was in government to make such a call for their arrest, which could overheat the polity, especially now the country is preparing to hold a crucial election in two weeks time.
“Former Head of State and APC presidential candidate, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari made a public statement in 2011 that if the elections that year went the way of PDP the blood of baboons and dogs would flow.
“He said he would make the country ungovernable, and if Gen. Danjuma could recall, there was no arrest made to that effect, and even APC threatened to run a parallel government if they failed to be declared winners of the 2015 election and there was no call for their arrests.
“Nigerians should understand that peace in the nation’s political and economic life is as a result of the doggedness and commitment demonstrated by Tompolo, Dokubo, Boyloaf, and other freedom fighters who have resolved that peace must be restored and maintained in the Niger Delta and the nation at large.
“Since they took it upon themselves there has been calm in the oil rich Niger Delta, which has placed Nigeria as a leading oil and gas producing and exporting nation in Africa and the world. Over 2 million barrels of crude oil is being produced in the area.
“Also most of the agitating ex-militants in the area are now professionally trained in different areas of specialization within and outside the country under three years as these leaders of freedom fighters has been part of the value added on the life of these youth under the government of President Goodluck Jonathan.
“The peace in the Niger Delta has transformed into massive development and economic growth, and that was why the APC could have a peaceful campaign in the region. And their commitment to peace brought about the establishment of the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs and Niger Delta Development Commission, including the amnesty programme.

“The late President, Alhaji Umaru Musa Yar’Adua recognised the strategic role played by these distinguished Niger Delta leaders to restore peace in the region and even wine and dine with them at the Presidential Villa, and he will not be happy to hear in his grave that somebody called for their arrest. Let them be, because they have not committed any crime by voicing their views,” the statement added.

Robotic glove teaches your hand the basics of drawing

Whether it was after getting hooked on your first comic, taking a college art class, or even idly doodling on your math book instead of paying attention to your teacher, we’ve all experimented with drawing. Unless you’re one of the people that can actually do it well, you likely gave up and moved on, wondering how other humans can mix lines together to create something both recognizable and aesthetically pleasing. If you’re illustrationally-challenged, your salvation may lie not with humanity, but with robotics. A new robotic glove teaches you how to draw by becoming training your muscle memory.
Copenhagen Institute of Interaction Design student Saurabh Datta developed the glove as part of his thesis, initially as a way to learn to play the piano. If his human hands couldn’t learn, maybe some robot hands could teach them — and no, the robot hand doesn’t come from the Robot Devil, despite the startlingly similar way the idea was conceived. Called Teacher, the glove-like robot straps onto your hand and fingers, and guides you through specific gestures over and over. If you do it enough, your hand will learn how to do itthrough sheer muscle memory.
Obviously, this won’t teach you instinct or how to transfer something from your imagination to paper, but at the very least, the theory is that it’ll teach you basics — how to make aesthetically pleasing lines.
Now, it only took Datta a week to build the rig. It’s not exactly the teacher after which it’s named, but instead represents the way humans and robots can and do interact when working to achieve the same goal. Despite being presented with the potential to learn how to draw, Datta found that most participants didn’t like when the glove controlled the majority of the movement — they’d fight against the haptic feedback, and constantly readjust their hand within the contraption to find a more comfortable position. To fix the comfort issue, Datta recorded the fidgets made by the testers, and then adjusted the machine’s force feedback to account for them. In turn, this also helped the machine learn about the way humans naturally move.
Datta’s machines won’t suddenly help you create the best DeviantArt page the internet has ever known, but it’s essentially a proof-of-concept for machines doing our learning for us. You can check out the full project over here, including development diagrams and (long) demonstration videos.

Microsoft tries to thwart Google by investing in Cyanogen

Windows Phone still hasn’t set the world on fire, so it seems Microsoft is investigating other ways to compete against Google and Apple in the mobile market. Reports are coming in that Microsoft will participate in a round of funding for Cyanogen, Inc. — the commercial enterprise that formed out of the CyanogenMod community. This will only give Microsoft a minority stake in the company, but this could hint at large changes for one of the largest tech companies in the world.
Over at the Wall Street Journal, a few nuggets of information have come to light regarding Microsoft’s decision to help fund this fork of Android. Details are slim, but sources claim that Microsoft will be a “minority investor” in Cyanogen’s latest round of funding (estimated at $70 million). At the very least, this is Microsoft hedging its bets. On the other hand, maybe there’s more to this story. Microsoft might just be laying the groundwork for a future without Windows Phone.
Earlier this week, Microsoft released the first stable version of Office on Android. Similarly, the brand new mobile version of Outlookdebuted on iOS. Microsoft is well aware of which way the wind is blowing, and it seems increasingly focused on delivering top-tier support to competing platforms. Since Windows Phone reportedly only has 3% of mobile marketshare, it’s easy to see why Redmond has shifted its priorities.
Over the last few years, Cyanogen has been busy partnering with hardware manufacturers across the globe. Specifically, this small company is focused on expanding in emerging markets where the established players haven’t taken over yet. By Strategy Analytics’ account, roughly 37% of Android devices worldwide are using off-brand forks, so there’s obviously a lot of money at stake here. If Microsoft can get a piece of that massive pie, all the better for its shareholders.
With free access to Office and free upgrades to Windows 10, Microsoft is bowing to market realities. Google Docs and OS X make it increasingly difficult for Microsoft to sell its products outright. Instead, money has to come from subscriptions services and support contracts. None of that is inherently bad, but clearly the Microsoft of 2015 shows little resemblance to the Microsoft of ten or twenty years ago. This news serves as a stark reminder that the old grey mare just ain’t what she used to be.

Jonathan Lacks Will To Crush B’Haram, Buhari Tells Kerry

The All Progressives Congress presidential candidate, Maj.Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), has listed the strategies that he would adopt to end insecurity in the country if elected President.
The methods, The PUNCH learnt, were unveiled by Buhari during his meeting with the United States Secretary of State, John Kerry, in Lagos on Sunday.
The source, who was one of the APC members that also attended the meeting, said on Monday that the strategies included the elimination of corruption, transparency in the management of defence budgets and an overhaul of the nation’s security apparatuses.
He said that Buhari highlighted the plans when Kerry expressed concern about the spate of insecurity in the North-East.
The source added, “Kerry said the US was interested in someone that could curb the Boko Haram menace. He said the concern of President Barack Obama was that terrorism should not spread beyond the North-East as it seemed to be doing so gradually.
“Kerry asked what the strategy of the APC would be in fighting insecurity.”
One of our correspondents gathered that while responding, Buhari said since he knows that corruption and lack of political will are some of the problems militating against the war against insurgency, he would tackle them headlong if elected.
Buhari was said to have told Kerry that the Goodluck Jonathan administration had spent billions of dollars on defence and that a large portion of the money was diverted by those in power.
It was also learnt that the APC candidate informed the Secretary of State that the President had turned a blind eye to this.
Buhari was said to have also stated that there was something wrong with the intelligence-gathering mechanism of the military. He therefore promised that he would revamp the security apparatuses of the government.
According to our source, the APC candidate said “that Boko Haram members were not ghosts but that they were gaining ground because the security agencies had been compromised.”
He said that the former Head of State also promised that transparency would be his watchword in the disbursement of defence budgets.
It was gathered that Buhari “promised to ensure that every kobo spent on security would be accounted for as this would ensure that our soldiers get the appropriate equipment and have their morale boosted.”
He was also said to have told Kerry that the Jonathan government once scuttled a hearing by the National Assembly on defence spending, an act that clearly showed that it was not ready to promote transparency in the management of the nation’s affairs.
“Buhari said when the National Assembly set up a hearing with the heads of security agencies to know how the defence budgets were being spent, the Presidency scuttled it because it was obvious that the money for equipment was not being spent judiciously. He said by such an act, the Jonathan government was not encouraging transparency in the way and manner money meant for security was being spent.”
The PUNCH gathered that APC leaders like the National Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun; Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, who were also at the meeting, urged the US to impress it upon the Jonathan government to ensure that next month’s elections were not postponed.
Kerry was said to have expressed worry at the pre-election violence in the country but the APC leaders told him that they had nothing to do with it.
The APC Presidential Campaign Organisation has however welcomed the call by the US for free, fair and peaceful elections in Nigeria.
The organisation, in a statement by its Director, Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, said it fully identified with Washington’s appeal to political parties to ensure credible polls.
According to the statement, the Jonathan administration and all responsible politicians should support the objectives of free, fair and peaceful polls as advocated by the US government.
The statement read in part, “He(Kerry) explained that the US and other members of the international community should not leave the Jonathan administration to its devices or whims and caprices, adding that the government must be held to these commitments to avoid any hanky-panky during the elections.
“On the US threat to deny visa to politicians that engage in electoral violence and malpractices, the APC Campaign organisation said it fully endorsed the measure to serve as a deterrent and give credibility to Nigeria’s democracy and electoral system.”
I can’t fight corruption by jailing people, Jonathan insists
Meanwhile, Jonathan has insisted that he will not fight corruption by jailing people.
He, however, stated that he would build a system that would block people’s direct access to funds.
The President said this at a corporate forum titled, ‘An Evening with Dr. Goodluck Ebele Azikiwe Jonathan’ in Lagos on Sunday.
He said even if five million Nigerians were thrown into jail for corruption, graft would still continue if the system was porous.
He said, “People always say government is not fighting corruption but our position is very clear. We are fighting corruption and our position is that fighting corruption is not all about jailing people and showing them on television sets.
“In this country, we never had armed robbery until the civil war when small arms were being used. Initially, armed robbers were being shot in public and later in secret. But it did not stop armed robbery; so our commitment is in the British law system that states that it is better for nine criminals to go free than for one innocent person to suffer undue punishment. In that case, the concept of beyond reasonable doubt is always difficult to prove in corrupt cases and that is why they even accuse the EFCC (Economic and Financial Crimes Commission) of going for plea bargain.
“In the area of arrest, the EFCC has prosecuted more people and has secured more convictions than before but even if you prosecute 10 million Nigerians and convict five million, it will not stop corruption. Yes, you are fighting corruption which must continue but the most important thing is to block those avenues that corruption can occur.”
The President also promised to bring the fight against insurgency to an end if re-elected.
Earlier, many of his key ministers had spoken about the administration’s achievements.
For instance, the Minister of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, said the recent rebasing of the GDP showed that the Jonathan administration had actually diversified the economy better than its predecessors.
Okonjo-Iweala, however, warned that there would be tough days ahead but maintained that the diversification of the economy would cushion the drop in the price of crude oil.
The Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, said there had been giant strides in the oil sector but lamented that pipeline vandalism was affecting both oil production and revenue.
She said over 60,000 barrels of crude were still being lost to the act daily.
Also speaking, the Chairman, Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, said the economy should be diversified such that oil would constitute only about 40 per cent of the nation’s revenue.
Dangote, who called on the government to ensure job creation, said it was unfortunate that within 90 days the price of oil went from $110 per barrel to less than $50.

New aluminum air battery could blow past lithium-ion, runs on water

As battery technologies go, the world has a love-hate relationship with lithium-ion. On the one hand, breakthroughs in Li-ion designs and construction are responsible for theTesla Model S, new installations, green energy research, and the modern smartphone. On the other hand, lithium-ion limitations are the reason why most EVs have a range of 40-60 miles, the Model S costs upwards of $80,000, and why your smartphone can’t last all day on a single charge. For all its promise and capability, lithium-ion has limited long-term utility — which is why a new announcement from Fuji Pigment is so interesting. The company is claiming that its new aluminum-air batteries can run for up to two weeks and be refilled with normal water.

How an aluminum-air battery works

First, some basics. The problem with battery technology isn’t whether or not we can build better batteries — as the chart below shows, we can build batteries that blow traditional lithium-ion out of the water. Keep in mind that the chart below is exponential, meaning that fuel cell technology has 10 times the energy density of a typical cobalt-Li ion battery.
The various “Metal-Air” batteries, including zinc-air, aluminum-air, and lithium-air, have some of the highest energy densities its possible to build. The difficulties with aluminum-air construction, in particular, has been rapid degradation of the anode and, in early models of Al-Air, the release of hydrogen gas.
Fuji Pigment’s new announcement makes repeated reference to the work of Ryohei Mori, and while the referenced papers aren’t available for free, the abstracts are online. The studies in question are all aimed at enhancing the performance of Al-air batteries while extending their useful lifetimes — typically, Al-air solutions begin to degrade immediately after the first charge cycle. According to Mori’s work, creating a secondary aluminum-air battery adjacent to the primary buffered the accumulation of byproducts that normally prevent the battery from working properly over the long term.
The “rechargability” of Al-air batteries requires some explanation. Al-air batteries are primary cells, which means they can’t be recharged via conventional means. As the aluminum anode is consumed by contact with oxygen, hydrated aluminum forms as a byproduct. That material can be recycled and used to create a new aluminum anode, which is why the batteries are referred to as rechargeable. Periodically, the aluminum anode will have to be replaced — it’s not clear how often the Fuji Pigment battery would need servicing of this sort.

Could Al-air be the next big thing?

New battery technologies and announcements are a dime a dozen, but there’s reason to think that a workable Al-air technology could deploy within the next 2-5 years. Multiple manufacturers are working on commercializing designs (Alcoa partnered with Phinergy in 2013 with plans for a 2017 debut), and aluminum is abundant and relatively cheap. Al-air batteries have actually been used in specialized military applications for years, which is important — it means there’s some pre-existing expertise and known characteristics that can be leveraged to create additional capacity.
That said, there are question, too. The hydrated aluminum oxide solution produced during the battery’s normal operation would need to be recycled in some fashion, it’s not clear that fresh water is as effective an aqueous solution as saltwater (meaning there might be specific need for one particular kind of solution). The final price is also unknown, though previous estimations had put the cost of an Al-air system at roughly $1.1 per kg of aluminum anode. This was not given in precise terms relative to the cost of gasoline (and the weight of the aluminum anode in these batteries is unknown), but the team that performed that analysis noted that proper recycling would put Al-air in the same cost range as conventional internal combustion engines.
Fuji Pigment has stated that it intends to commercialize this technology as early as this year, which means we could see test demonstrations and proof of concepts by 2016. Whether auto manufacturers will jump for the technology remains to be seen — car companies tend to be conservative and Tesla has already thrown its weight behind the further use of lithium-ion technology.

Windows 10 preview: A glimpse of our desktop future

The Windows 10 technical preview program started off cautiously. The first few builds could almost have been mistaken for Windows 8.2 — which is to say that they featured some solid changes that helped address the obvious shortcomings of Windows 8 and 8.1, but not much else. That’s changed with the latest preview (Build 9926), released by Microsoft only days after Terry Myerson and Joe Belfiore showcased many of the expected highlights of Windows 10.
We are finally getting to experience the outline of the next generation of the Windows OS. The new hybrid Start menu is in place, Cortana has taken its first bows, and we have been introduced to Continuum — Microsoft’s answer to the tablet versus desktop confusion of Windows 8. With all these new technologies come a lot of rough edges — which has made evaluating the new preview release more challenging than previous versions. But  spending a few days working with it on a variety of devices has provided a good view into what will be the future desktop — and perhaps mobile — OS for many of us.

The Start menu rises from the dead: Will you welcome it back?

In a valiant attempt to be all things to all people, Microsoft has re-created its Start menu as a massive hybrid of application list, live tiles, suggested help topics, and “Everyday apps.” Once you get your head around it, the design is fairly flexible. The tile portion can be re-arranged just like the Start screen in the Modern UI of Windows 8.
The Start display (its not quite correct to call it either a menu or a screen, and it isn’t exactly a window) can also be shown either fullscreen or as a smaller version more similar to the old-fashioned Start menu. Purists will quickly notice that the actual menu portion only displays a few items (Places and Most used items) by default.
To get to a complete list of applications, you need to press the small “All apps” link at the bottom of the list. Unfortunately, in my case at least, that link was often obscured by the Taskbar, but I assume that will be fixed in future versions. A larger issue with the all apps display is that it is just one long list. If you have a touch screen you can move up and down the list fairly quickly, but there does not seem to be any equivalent to the popular cascading-menu design featured in Windows 7.

Cortana may have had a few too many drinks before her debut

As promised, Cortana has been integrated into the Taskbar, but it isn’t very useful or easy to use yet. In theory, when you hit the Windows key and start typing, your keystrokes will go to Cortana. It (she?) will then handle the (hopefully) very quick search for matching applications (e.g. if you type Word or OneNote or Control Panel) and also more sophisticated questions (ala Siri or Google Now or Amazon’s Alexa). From having used Windows Phone 8, I know Cortana is capable of quite a lot. But the implementation in Windows 10 is currently really broken. Sometimes typing does nothing, other times Cortana is confused. And it doesn’t have nearly the sophistication of the Windows Phone version. Its ability to answer questions also seems to vary from hour to hour.
Presumably all of that will get sorted out before the product ships, but I hope early users not familiar with what Microsoft can really do with Cortana don’t get turned off by the current implementation. Microsoft has covered its user-experience bases here as well — you can type, click the microphone icon, or turn on recognition of “Hey, Cortana” to get the AI’s attention.
A bigger complication of integrating Cortana into the Taskbar will be the inherent ambiguity of replacing a quick system lookup function with a complex AI-powered search tool. Windows 8’s integration of Microsoft Search into the simple command lookup function got a lot of pushback, and the integration of Cortana risks making that worse. There are lots of possibilities for confusion. Typing “Time” for example, wound up getting me the New York Times crossword puzzle at one point. At another, typing, “What is the time?” brought up the Windows Clock application. Cortana also has the sort of attitude that people might not want from a computer that doesn’t understand what they just said. For example, one of the canned answers when Cortana doesn’t understand how to deal with your question is “A circle is infinite, but my answers are not.” It made me wish for the return of Clippit.
Despite the teething pains in this early version, if Microsoft can combine the convenience of a voice-activated interface like Amazon’s Alexa with context-sensitive desktop search, then users will definitely benefit. Think how nice it would be to be able to simply ask your PC to play a different song or add a reminder to your calendar while you are still typing a Word document or playing a game.
